My long weekend runs have been:
- 8 miles
- Hood to Coast Relay=17 total miles
- 10 miles
- 11.5 miles
- 6.5 miles (out of town, thanks Hurricane)
- 14 miles (sick and sorely paid for it afterwards)
- 18 miles
Our race is Dec 6, so 10 weeks away. This Friday night I'll do another long one since we're doing a 5K in the morning (I have to walk with the jogger for this one), then we're doing a half marathon next week (13.1), so the next week I really need to up the mileage I'm thinking because we're going to Peru the next day and won't be able to really run for 9 days. Then I'll only have 5 weeks before the marathon when we get back. How far along should I be at that point?
Q: Could you send me your training schedule if you did one?
Q: Any marathon advice?

I really, really like the Furman Institute's FIRST program. I've used it twice now. I'm also planning to hire Cassie Dimmick (google her) as my running coach when I train for Boston this winter.
I saw you over by the Westside Events Center on Saturday on your run. They have drinking fountains there (both inside and at the dog park)and there are bathrooms at the baseball diamond. I also stash a big water bottle at the church and use it to fill up my amphipod.
Good luck! You're getting really close!
Hey Afton, we ran the St. George and did the Hal Higdons training schedule, here is the link http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00intermediate.htm
What I want to know is how you got started, ESPECIALLY remembering our conversations about having two close in age kids. It seems every time I get started into running again, I'm pregnant again, OR can't go long (not that I've wanted to even--I don't love it that much yet) because I'm nursing again. How do you even get over the "I hate this!" thoughts with every step?!
Girl, I second the recommendation to go with Cassie. She rocks and is a mommy to two girls so she understands everything. Before we ran our marathon in 2005 (we just got over the line--it wasn't about time) we had done 21 miles twice. I remember someone saying if you can do 21, then you can do 26.2. Best of luck!!! Oh, and I totally wish IPods had the radio, too!!!
I didn't have a training schedule per say - but i ran at least 50 miles a week - usually including at least one days run being over 12miles. A month before the race i made sure i could do 20 i think - i hadn't ran the 26.2 until the day of the race - maybe it wasn't smart but i wasn't looking to win i just wanted to run the whole thing. I felt that my getting that much mileage in over a week got my body pretty ready for the pounding of the long long race. So fun!
I haven't run a marathon, but I've heard multiple people tell me that your last long run should be 1 week or more before the marathon and then you should only do recovery runs the last week before the marathon. In other words - your major training should be done the week before. Hope that helps! Good luck! You are awesome!!

No real training advice for running, but target sells small radios that are about the size of an ipod. They even come with an arm strap.
Thanks for the tip Arlynda and all the running advice and emails from everyone else. Shelah, which First program did you use? I'm guessing you used the First to the Finish (or whatever one is to improve your time)--I printed off the easier one, but I don't know if it will be enough, so I'll probably up it a little.
Bre, I looked into that guy's training schedule a long time ago when I considered it, but forgot about him, I'll look up his again, thanks!
Vicki, so is the farthest you did before the marathon 20 miles? I've heard of people doing that, but those last six sound like torture then. I'm just looking to finish in a respectable time compared to what I've been training in, not trying to be super fast or anything. I want to enjoy it as much as possible, so that's why I want to put in the training...can't figure out how many long runs to do beforehand though.
Good advice from you too Alicia, I've heard that as well. I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions on how far before the marathon you should taper off, 3 weeks sounds awfully far away, is 2 good enough??
Kirsten, it is very very hard to do, so I will probably ask myself how I did this in a few years. It's just something I've always wanted to do and I'm realizing it's only going to get harder (or probably easier if Josh and I weren't both training), so other things are getting sacrificed.
I wanted to get one in before I got pregnant again and I really wanted to do something for myself in between these babies, even if it's sort of like torture:). I don't know though, I guess I look to my friend Shelah who has four kids and is doing them for inspiration!
That's so cool. I forgot you're going to peru. wow, that's coming up soon. yay!!! you should stop by ecuador and say hello. are you hiking machu picchu?
Yeah we're hiking Machu Picchu, it's going to be gorgeous (as long as it doesn't rain, well, still gorgeous I'm sure, but a little less pleasant). I'm thinking Hawaii would have been better now since we had tix to anywhere, but Peru was cheaper once there and it's probably only going to get more populated, so that's the idea.
