Autumn, my sister, wrote about Rhianna today and how she wasn't able to tolerate her until recently and now she even likes her new song, "Take a Bow"--which happens to drive me nuts. Why does it drive me nuts? Well, aside from it being her and her whiney voice and plastic wrapped clothes cut with oversized air holes in places, her new song talks about how the guys looks so "dumb."
Now I tend to use that word probably more than I should, point being, I like the word well enough, but I thought it was, well, a dumb word for the song. In the middle of all her sass, it was sort of childish sounding. That alone just makes me think the whole song is dumb, and I can't seem to get past that--whenever that happens.
There is a country song out right now, I think it's Rascal Flatts, who knows, but in the first opening line or two, he happens to run out of words and fills in with a dramatic, "Yaa aaa" that again, just sounds so dumb. I don't mind the rest of the song, but having this in the beginning just sort of ruins the whole thing for me. (Gosh, I just looked all over and can't find that song, why did I waste my time doing that? Do any of you know what I'm talking about?) That said, it almost works in their favor sometimes because I've started making fun of it so much (just to myself or Josh or Hazel) that when it comes on I sing to it and sort of relish in how dumb it sounds. Do you know what I mean?
I wish I could remember the other songs out right now that I feel the same way about, but I can't think of them since I'm listening to Whitney Houston--who I have decidedly marked as the best singer EVER. Oh man, she just makes me want to stand on the table and open my arms and burst my lungs open. It's such a disappointment when I just burst out a really painful sounding voice instead, so it turns more into charades. Oh goodness, you guys have to listen to her to feel this.
Her voice is incredible, too bad she's nuts now.
I have to add that that one word or sound (you know what I mean, where they get a little too creative in trying to fill in space or a strange build up to the climax) in a song goes for movies too, that one scene in a movie just tends to ruin it for me. I'm not saying I like this quality, just saying. One more example. The other night we were watching, "So You Think You Can Dance" and there was a dance where Thayne was just terrible and there was this really awkward moment (to just choose one) in his solo where it looked like he hadn't planned anything and so he just ran around for a minute during what should have been this great climax to his performance to go with the song...oh but it was terrible. So terrible that I rewound it over and over again. This was just painful for Josh who wanted to rewatch the good ones, but those are far less interesting to me, I love watching awkwardness.
Check this out and tell me if you agree that he was thinking, "Oh I'll go this way...oh no, I think I'll go this way and oh boy, I'm so excited, I think I'll jump!"
Q: How about you? Do you care about dumb words in songs?
Q: What songs bug you?
Q: Were you loving Thayne as much as I was that night?

Afton I'm cracking up at watching Thayne run around the stage! It looks like he starts to go one way and then thinks, "Oh man this isn't my good side, better turn the other way!" That show is one of my guilty pleasures, probably because I couldn't dance to save my life. :o)
I did think it was a bit awkward when I saw Thayne's solo, but more awkward was when Lacey forgot her whole solo last year! It was horrible with her sliding everywhere because she couldn't remember anything- and in a later show she admitted to forgetting her dance and that moment being the worst moment of her life pretty much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZanZztjVLv0&feature=related
I never listen to the radio so I don't really have any song annoyances at the moment. But that solo of Thayne's was definitely funny. And although he danced well last night, I have just not been into him. I wasn't sad to see him go. And I'm so glad that Comfort is finally gone too. She just wasn't cutting it.
WHITNEY! I got on a Whitney streak a while back and started watching (more like listening) all of her youtube videos. I played this one over and over and over again. Chills. Every time. The woman is AMAZING. I love your description of what Thayne is doing-an I have to say, it looks like that is exactly what he is thinking!
oh, and I also think your take on the word "dumb" is funny. I don't particularly feel that way about that word in the song, but I do think the moment where she pauses and says "please" is kind of odd. Maybe necessary b/c it would sound strange if it were sung too, but I always am a bit annoyed with that moment of it.
i strangely like that rhianna song. i don't know why, because i find her slightly annoying too.
i'm a huge s.y.t.y.c.d. fan too!
Surprise surprise that he was kicked off. Poor guy in the bottom three with two phenomenal dancers...see ya Thayne.
