I LOVE it when I check of things on my to-do list, but I esp love it when it's something that changes the scheme of our home or is a creative outlet rather than maintenance, like doing the dishes.
Anywho, this little wall next to Hazel's room used to be a blank gray wall (does it confuse anyone else why you can spell gray/grey two ways?). Now, voila! I put up Hazel's awesome new "Melissa and Doug"responsibility chart (only $11 on amazon instead of the $20 I spent, shoot). Okay, side tangent for the chart--it's magnetic and Hazel helps me choose a new set of 7 responsibilities each week and helps me decide if she's earned her "super" or "great" circle for it at the end of the day. She LOVES it (this is actually the first full week we've had home with it) and we celebrated with a movie tonight for the end of the week.
One of my fav parts was that the girls wanted to help me. Hazel held the magnetic strip very carefully in place while I drilled and City made trash runs. They both were helping with the hooks and getting chalk, etc., it was such a fun, fast little project to do together.
They of course loved their new play wall and decided to have a birthday party for their baby dolls. They erased their original drawings--with a measly square of tp kitty corner to the wall--also a perfect little perk that they can clean it up by themselves (just keeps getting better)--and had me draw a bday cake. They proceeded to bring their dolls out and sang them happy birthday and then "blew" out the candles.
I would say I can't tell you how much I love this little creation, but then again, I think you have. I love that it doesn't take up any more space, it's not something they can get out and make a mess that we'll have to spend time cleaning up, like toys, you can't see it from down the hall, it's perfect. And maybe I'm a little obsessed with how great it is, and maybe part of that is because any bit of productivity on my part these days calls for a celebration. Either way, I feel like it's my birthday too :).
And now, notice my other cool items that I must rave about. See the orange thing? I went to the Crate and Barrel outlet last week in Berkeley--which I've had on my fun to-do list since moving here--and bought this groovy little orange magnetic strip. I planned on putting it in our entry way for keys, but I thought this would be the perfect spot for it so I could put the magnetic basket--also on my love list from a C&B outlet we went to in TX (they are so awesome huh?)--on it for chalk. Gosh I love this!
I opted to cut out a little hole from the top of the "chalkboard" for two more 3m hooks so we can move Hazel's chart down at night so she can help put her circles up. I love the functionality of the whole thing. They of course loved their new play wall and decided to have a birthday party for their baby dolls. Q: Do you like the chart or blackboard better? Or are you like me, love em both?
Q: Anyone ever try the chalkboard paint?

I love both! So, so cute.
I'm totally loving blackboards right now -- something about using old-fashioned chalk to write down messages, menus, to-do lists, etc.
Also, black-board paint comes in all sorts of colors now! You don't have to stick to just black or that awful school-board green anymore. You can get purple, yellow, blue, green -- all sorts! Fun, fun. I just finished a blackboard for my kitchen last week.
Afton!! Nice job!!!! I love it! I agree, nice that it doesn't take up any more space! Sweet charts too!! Go you-I think I'd have been lazy about it and waited for Jake to drill. I love it that the girls had a bday party!
Umm...I miss you. A lot. I have had my favorite Southams on my mind lately. Your girls are darling and I am thrilled for your soon to be boy. You are about the skinniest pregnant girl I have ever seen. What a babe. Love you Afton.
Took me time to read the whole article, the article is great but the comments bring more brainstorm ideas, thanks.

LOVE LOVE the wall! Perfect spot, too.
I do have a chalkboard paint chalkboard in my kitchen. I love it, works great. I had read up online that the only complaint is that no matter how hard you scrub it it doesn't come clean. But then an old bartender got on the discussion and said that Coke makes it like new. Voila - it looks beautiful and I love my chalkboard! I also drew a permanent calendar on part of it using a white Sharpie paint pen. I'm kind of obsessed with it (kind of like I'm obsessed with your wall!).
Oh, and Afton, a BOY!!!! Wow. So excited for you! I know I'm a little biased, but I love little boys and all their creative messiness and energy...they're just my little men (actually, sometimes I call them my little boyfriends). So fun - your girls are going to spoil him! I can't wait to hear names!
I love your wall, AFton! I need to get one of those for my kids. I've been trying to think of a way to make responsibilities/chores fun for them and rewarding, and that looks perfect! And how great to have a board for them to get some creativity out and not make a mess! Great job, I am going to try to copy you. :)
PS-you don't even look pregnant, skinny girl. No fair...I sure do! :)
Love it!! : ) So fun Afty, keep up the good work -- looks like so much fun!
love both, afton. we have some vinyl chalk circle stickers in the baby's room - when i'm nursing in there, i'll ask the kids to draw this or that, or write their names...it keeps them busy (and not fighting) while i nurse. it's been GREAT!
I love it Afton! You did it again! Are they loving it?! I meant to tell you before how cool it was! Definitely a great vinyl idea!
