My Frenemy is Back

Last year, it died on me on a hot day during a 14 miler, in a new area. I was sort of crushed, mostly crushed. It had been my constant companion through every beastly and every great run, my biggest cheerleader and my biggest critic. So in a way, I was sort of liberated.

And now it's back, and a little souped up. Smells good too.

Can't see it? It's a new Garmin GPS watch with a heart rate monitor. I'd been talking about getting a new one all last year. It was good for me to go without though, go through withdrawal, learn to run just to run and to socialize, not to beat times. It was esp good for me to not have during an injury and marathon training last summer during our house mess, it kept the temptation to push at bay, because really, as I discussed with Josh last night, I used to run (and sort of still do) in large part so I can track a tangible improvement in my life, so it would have been hard to see my pace slip.

I've been wanting one more and more though with this half marathon coming up. I want to know how far I'm going instead of doing mapmyrun.com and just clocking it. I want to do a 10K on Saturday and I want to know my pace. I've been not-so-secretly begging for one for a long time and put the plug in for either a sewing machine or GPS watch for Mother's Day. I was talking about it again last night and how helpful it would be and Josh ran back to the bedroom and appeared with this big watch box. AHHHHHH! I was stunned, totally stunned. I really had ZERO clue and was thrilled. He loved the shock factor, and it totally worked.

I was actually up earlier today and motivated to run to test it out, see it is a good thing, for now anyway. I was happy to see that I was still able to keep my pace what it was last year with the stroller, but not so happy to see that my 4 mile loop was more like 3.8 miles. I know, a little crazy, but that run I thought I was doing 7min50sec miles, not so. See what I mean? Oh the conflict. It was fun to see my heart rate too, but I have no idea what it means yet.

Bring on the running!

Q: Do you run with one of these?
Q? Do you like it?

yay for the frenemy! so, as you already know, i have one and totally love it... can't live without out. although, i totally agree that sometimes its nice to leave it home and just not worry about my pace.

Jason and Travis have been raving about those! Travis really, REALLY wants one. I don't know that I care that much about my pace to actually have one, though. I just run to relax, clear my head and feel good - if I can guesstimate my pace, that's fine with me. I think a monitor like that would distract me too much and make running not as fun for me. Maybe not - maybe I'd love it... but way to go Josh! So thoughtful.

hey! for your heart rate use the karvonen formula. if you want to calculate it yourself here is a link (it's pretty easy).

or, this link will calculate it for you.

Woohoo! I just got mine in the mail yesterday. If it wasn't for the necessary 3 hour charge before turning it on for the first time I would have been off and running as soon as it came out of the box. I figured I would follow the directions and then just go for a run in the morning, but then I went to a softball game last night and pulled a muscle in my leg! :( I am sooooo sad that I won't be able to use it for a little while. Boohoo!

I think it's from growing up doing competitive sports that makes it impossible for me to run just to run. I think since my first run just two and half months ago I've been telling Pat I want a GPS watch because I obsess about knowing how fast and far I am going to make sure I'm constantly improving. I LOVE that you call it your frenemy because I'm pretty sure that's what it will be for me. You are hilarious!

I don't really run. I did my first 5k in St. George at the end of February, and it was a lot of fun. But I haven't done one since. I think I'd like to get back into it, but I'll never be the type of runner that would be able to justify the expense of that watch.
That being said, your colorful tile back splash looks great!
