Four things.
1. I went to the home birth lounge and as soon as the midwife came out with a tie dye dress and was au natural, I liked her, this was the real deal. She was really personable, knowledgeable and had interesting things to say. I haven't done the reading, but based on the other moms there who had, stats are that home births have a higher success rate for turning out babies, or something like that. That said, I wouldn't do it unless Josh and I were as well read and convinced ourselves of what could happen.
Aside from the safety topic, I think I still like the idea of being at a hospital for the after birth time and having my children in our home and playing with family rather than me there trying to adjust with the new baby and my other children running around. That sounds a little stressful. But so does jumping through policy hoops at the hospital. I did learn some good things about what I can put my foot down on while at the hospital, so that was encouraging.
2. After many many hours of sorting, uploading, arranging and writing, I have finally organized my pics of our house renovation. You can find them here: http://aftonio.smugmug.com/DIY. I am only doing the trial, so they may be gone in five days and we'll see if I can figure it out enough to decide to join by then.
Here are a few I just pulled.
3. Josh and I decided on a place to take our honeymoon (we'll just call it that anyway): Hawaii! We are sooo excited, me esp since I haven't ever been there. I just checked out a bunch of books and hope to find the best places so we can just veg while there. That's why we opted out of doing a more exotic trip because if the purpose of this trip is to relax, we think we'd feel compelled to go go go if we went somewhere else. We'll go to Oahu and Kauai. Any favorite things to do there?
4. Seeing as we'll be going somewhere where we'll be in swimming suits, I've been trying to work up the motivation to get a little more fit before we go. I was listening to the radio the other night and they said Lent was starting and I thought, ah ha! That's it! I'll start no sweets for Lent. I'm not Catholic, but I like the idea of going without. My purpose won't be spiritual, but it will be for a healthier body and only for three weeks. I can do that, I have done that, and for much longer, so this shouldn't be too bad.
Also no eating after 8. I'm on day two and I've already survived my family eating chocolate covered strawberry marshmellos we dipped. The diet is off the second we're on that plane to Hawaii (or maybe the night before since we'll have company). That's how it was when I left Uganda, I'd been on no sweets for two months and as soon as I was on that plane I celebrated with chocolate. It never tasted so good.
Q: Any favorite places to relax or eat on those islands? Or fun unusual things? I'd maybe like to rent bikes or mopeds if we can find a place. Or secluded beaches on Kauai?
Q: Anyone else giving up anything for Lent? :) How about healthy snack ideas?

i'll have to ask Travis for some good beach spots - his family has taken at least 3 trips there together and he RAVES about it! i've always been the kind to dream about vacationing in Europe, but the way he describes Hawaii, he gets me VERY excited to go! that will be SO fun for you guys. and relaxing. that would be awfully nice right now, during horrendous tax season days...
One of my favorite things to do on Kauai in kayaking up the Wailua River to the falls. Absolutely gorgeous. The South side of the island is the sunniest while the north gets a lot more rain. I would also suggest hiking the Napali Coast. Nothing compares.
As for Oahu, I'm partial to the North Shore since that's where I lived for three years. The Polynesian Cultural Center is over there along with BYUH and the temple. The beaches are fabulous on the North Shore, and a little local secret is to snorkel at Sharks Cove (no sharks just a lot of cool fish and turtles). Sharks Cove is just around the bend from Waimea Bay. You should also go into Haleiwa and get snow cones at Matsumotos, and then have dinner at Haleiwa Joes (try their Burnt Carmel Macadamia for dessert - to die for).
HOpe that helps!
Wow no sweets--I'm so impressed! I've just started the one treat/day rule and have been feeling good think I could go without.
Yesterday I started looking through a couple of those albums while Kaden was next to me and every picture he saw he'd say, 'who's that?' and I'd say Hazel (or whoever was in the picture) do you remember them? And he'd say yeah. And then we had the exact same conversation over and over again. It was funny. I'm amazed at how awesome your house looks!
Amen to the Napali Coast--one of the most incredible things I've ever seen! We took a helicopter ride to get the best view possible (and later hiked some of it too), and that was actually a great way to see all the waterfalls on the island too.
Poipu was fun for it's more traditionally beachy feel, while Bali Hai and Hanalei Bay were stunning and well worth the drive, especially around sunset.
