Josh and I took a trip to Peru a year and a half ago, it was awesome. He had traveled enough to earn us free tickets there and we had a relatively inexpensive trip once in Peru. It was sooo awesome and we loved it. I should really post pics from it...as I always intend. Here, while I'm at it, I'll write a list of a few things I should write and post about:
*Trip to Peru
*Memphis, Boston and St. George marathons
*Our mostly finished house project (HURRAY!)
Back on track here. The time is ripe for us to start planning another trip sans kids. There are a few reasons why:
-We have almost enough miles again to get us just about anywhere in the world (miles mostly accumulated while in Houston, which means he doesn't travel much here, so this may be the last time we have this luxury)
-I'm not pregnant, or nursing (which I was trying to keep up during our week long get away--yep, pumping on the old hiking trail during the cold nights in a tent on our way to Machu Picchu, and she wasn't even interested when we came back.)
-Pregnancy is in the near future plans and I don't really want to be sick while on vaca, which means it has to be before and then I'll be tied to a baby for pretty much the next 21 months.
-We've had a lot going on the past year, lots of good, but lots of stress, and we think it would be really awesome to set it all aside for a week and just honeymoon together (we plan to do fun things with the kids too, don't worry, we're not leaving them out:)
Here's the question, where to go?
We tossed a few ideas around when we were considering our last one, Hawaii, Argentina, Peru. Ultimately we decided to do Peru because we wanted to do something we couldn't do with the kids, like hike for four days carrying packs. At times I've wondered why on earth I thought you could do Hawaii with kids, the way I envisioned it anyway: sitting on a beach reading books all day, between naps of course. Which is why we're throwing that into the mix this time too. Josh also has two free nights at a Marriott there (or points elsewhere, just depends on the location).
Here area few places I'd like to see (not to exclude the rest of the world, these are just next on my wish list):
Japan
Argentina
Russia
Hawaii
Bali
But then as I sat thinking about what I really want from a vacation, I realized I would really love to just relax, at least part of the time. Which reminded me of treehouse vacations. I used to read about them any time I'd see something on them, they look so awesome.
I'd also love to go somewhere you can get pampered, on the cheap (like Asia or Africa, but more on the Asia side, I think they understand pampering tourists better).
Or just somewhere really unusual. I read up on some earthy vaca's a while back and they had you showering basically outside with just walls around you and your hotel room was really integrated with nature, that sounds awesome and spa like to me. Since I've never been to a spa (except that one day spa I got a deal on, so fun Alicia), I just have visions in my head from all the sites I dream about.
And cheap...yeah, that's the kicker. We have free plane tix and a night or two at a marriott, but it sounds fun to do a non-Marriott and something more different, or at least in an unusual location.
Q: Where should we go?
Q: Have you heard of any cool or different vacations?

Oh Afton, I adore you as much as ever. It's so fun to see and hear about all your doing. I don't get to comment much--blogger and Tahiti servers often don't get along, but I did want to let you know I'm out in the ocean listening and appreciating.
Speaking of....TAHITI of course. Well. Maybe not. It's got some really amazing things--like islands where no one, no one would bother you and it would be just you and the fish...but the lodgings aren't so cheap. On the other hand, our place is free and close to the beach and snorkeling...just not super luxurious. Tile floors for guests to be exact. BUT free!
But I do have a suggestion because I'll be tagging along in spirit (kind of where I've put running marathons--in SPIRIT) We were looking at what it might be like to live in Singapore (former Brit colony and English speaking) and one of the perks is the cheap traveling you can do in places like Malaysia. There is a Mormon family there with a blog and she talks about some of their travels around there. http://awaitingwinter.blogspot.com/
The point is that appears traveling around Asia can be cheap and full of interesting things to do.
There's always Hawaii. I say go big different now.
(And don't mention Singapore to your mom who might say something to your mom and confuse my mom. It was totally a wild idea nothing at all serious any time soon. My mom would freak if we did it.)
Hugs to you. Love the house. DYING to see more pics.
And did you ever get a rug? You're going shopping with me for my next house. Love your ideas.
Hey, Afton! Okay, my two cents is do something big and crazy and exotic. I would do Peru, but you did that! So Africa. Or Thailand. Or Greek isles would be romantic and so much fun!
But if you want Hawaii--and it also comes highly recommended by me!--you can rent the one bedroom beneath us for cheap, provided there's an opening when you want to come. E-mail me and I can send you details. We're on the North Shore of Oahu. Best location ever for beaches. And if you crave excitement, you can island hop: hang glide here, do a helicopter tour in Kuaui, hike an active volcano on the Big Island. Rental cars are pretty inexpensive here as are interisland flights. It would be fun to see you!
There is an American travel writer who lives here in Tahiti with her husband. I stopped there tonight and she was blogging about food in Malaysia. Yum. She posted some links about travel in that area.

What fun to think about a trip. Dream big.
Our before sleep pillow chat was about a trip somewhere to another island. Crossing fingers for a nice tax refund.
Oh wow, I'd do Hawaii, Greece or Italy. (we're working on our miles too!) Beaches and sun sound REAL nice right now...def. not w/my pregnant belly though. :) I've always wanted to go to India too, mainly because I love Indian food. Or go to Mexico to see the ruins there (I took art history classes on Mayan and Mesoamerican art...AMAZING), but you've seen the ruins in Peru already...I've heard Belize is awesome and some friends in Portland go to Thailand every year and RAVE about it. Good question, AFton...not sure I was very helpful. :) Have fun deciding!
Northern Spain/Southern France. You can hike the Picos de Europa, lounge at the beach and see some of the most beautiful places on earth. This is not the Madrid/Seville desert stuff--this is lush, green, rugged limestone mountains and a culture completely different than flamenco dancing. Plus, the food is simply amazing. And since it's Europe, you can get as pampered as you want to be.
Brazil!!! Jason and I spent 2 1/2 weeks there (prior to kiddos, of course). We stayed in nothing less than a 5 star hotel and spent a max of $18 per night. We took trains and buses around the country and hiked through a couple of countries at Iguacu Falls (make Niagara Falls look like a bathtub!)
Oops...Hit enter too soon...
Option #2 Cruising the Greek Isles! Gorgeous and can be as earthy or luxurious as you want it to be.!!!
Afton I love that treehouse! RAD!!! Um, I'd say Hawaii just to get it off the list (my list anyway). I think Bali also sounds good.
Ever heard of Utah? I hear it's great and the people there are supposed to be really awesome...
