Battle of the Rugs

I have a problem falling in love with certain design or decorating elements and not being able to move on. A couple of weeks ago during a tile decision that's taken me plenty of long, frustrating and boring trips for the kids to tile shops, I finally found "the one." The tile that would satisfy my long list of must haves: classy, contemporary, hides crumbs and other random bits well, and comfy on the feet.

It wasn't exactly fitting my "budget" preference or Josh's style, so we've put that on hold until countertops are in to decide with the overall look. Josh sweetly, but self-servingly, said, "I know you love it. But the great thing about you is that you love a lot of things, so I know that there is another tile out there that you'll love." Which I'm sure is true, but I'm sick of going to tile stores to try to make it all work well together.

Today it's rugs. Since I'd like to pick a rug to help determine the colors I use to paint with, I'd like to pick one asap. I've been doing lots of looking here as well and have come up with two. We're going for a retro-modern look to try to tap into our 1951 modern ranch home (it looks far from it now, I know), so here is my top pick:

Here is option #2. I don't like it nearly as well, but that's probably just because I've already given my heart to #1 whereas if I'd seen this one first maybe I'd be in love with it too. But it's price makes me start to reconsider my affections--it's a complete 51% cheaper than the first, which is a lot for a 9x11 rug.
Q: What's your fav, #1 or #2?
Q: Do you have this problem of falling for and not being able to move on bit? Great in marriage, bad in shopping, esp if $$.

I actually prefer #2. I like the colors more and the layout more.

Sorry to say, I like #1 - the contrasting colors always catch my eye...but if it's way too much $, I'd end up going with #2. Both are a cool design. Oh i'm so jealous - I adore the retro modern look - I'd love to fix up an old place!

Hey Afton! Well you asked, so I'm giving you the truth, I LOOOVE #1 and I think it looks like you. But Josh has a great point (which was hilarious how he worded his opinion in a way to sound like such a compliment to you! haha... awesome skill Josh) Anyway he has a good point, you would prob like either. If you keep thinking about it maybe you could hold off on other things and spend the $ on what you really want since it's a huge part of setting your room's look and something you'll think about each time you see it. I seem to regret it if there's something I absolutely love and still spend 1/2 of that for something I'm not excited about. Then again I dont know how much $ you're talking either! But that's the truth :) I've put off decorating till I dont feel guilty spending $ to make it how I want it so our walls and things have looked bare for a while but b/c I dont want to have an overall look I'm now thrilled about in the end.

I completely understand what you mean! I LOVE shopping for my next decorating adventure...but unfortunately the things I fall in love with are a good chunk of change...of course. Right now it's these two fabulous chairs...
Anyway, to answer your question...I personally really love #1 also, but I totally understand the budget constraints. For me, I usually allow one "splurge" per room that totally just "makes" the room. So, if you think that first rug would be the best thing in the room and make you smile whenever you see it, then I would "splurge". Otherwise, save the extra cash for something that you just can't live without.
Just my two cents!

Hope things are going well! It's fun to have new houses to redo, eh? Luke and I's projects are going at a snail's pace, but oh well. Have fun!

I do like both. They are similar but evoke a different feel. #1: playful, fun, stylized (styles do change), geometric. #2: bold, warm, rich, sophisticated. Have you decided yet? In which room will you be placing the rug?

This is funny-before I read the post, I went back and forth between them both, leaning towards #1. Then I read the price difference. I think I could change my desire for 51% of the cost. :) Good luck!!!!!

I vote for #1. . . maybe actual $$$ price would help decide too. :)

My problem isn't obsessing over design or decorating elements, but obsessing over organizational elements. Once I get some organizational idea in my head, it's hard to step away. Each one to his own. . .

I like #1--the loose pattern seems more contemporary. #2 seems more '70's.

I love #1 - I think #2 looks a little like a rug in an Asian home - which isn't bad at all, but not exactly modern/retro. Still, they're both great rugs.
Also, I totally understand giving your heart to something decorating-wise and then not being able to even consider anything else! My rule is that I ask myself if I will regret not getting it in a year. If I think I'll be over it and totally fine with something else a year from then when my world isn't revolving around decorating, then I move on. If I think I'll still be thinking about and regretting that other thing, then I get it.

By the way - can you decorate my house for me someday? Seriously, I might fly you out next year. That is, if you can stomach even thinking about decorating then! You are SO talented!

I like #2 better. It has a warm fuzzy feel about how it looks, and it makes me think of fireworks and Independence Day and being free. The colors of the bursts seem to stand out more than the first rug on the dark background too. And the bursts on the second rug don't seem to be placed - they look natural and happy in an uncrowded frame.

LOVE #1...If I were in this situation, I would end up buying #2, because it's the practical thing to do, but everytime I looked at it, I'd think about how much I loved #1 and how #2 just can never be #1...Therefore, I think you should go with #1....

i am so impressed with your abilities! how did you learn how to do all these things?!? i like both rugs . . . i feel like i would have to know more to choose between the two. but it seems you could be happy either way, since they share similarities. good luck and don't forget to share the finished product! :) laurel
