I'm in Ohio for two weeks at my parents with the girls so Josh can study for the CA bar exam in a little peace and quiet. It's been a lot of fun and we've been blessed with a winterwonderland of snow--like a week of school-canceled kind of snow. Unfortunately I'm supposed to be putting in a lot of miles for marathon training as well, so I bought a two week gym membership. I didn't feel like driving all the way in for a short run, so I just bundled up and ran outside.

I look little freaky huh?

Yes, that's tiny bits of ice on my eyelashes. It was 17 degrees out. I haven't given Houston the appreciation it's deserved all this time for being so nice to run in during the winter.

I was supposed to do 18 miles last week, but there was no way in this weather or on a treadmill, so I went to the gym and did 10 miles on a treadmill. That might not sound like a big deal for some of you, but I was dreading it all week because treadmills drive me crazy! I think I felt as much accomplishment running 10 on a treadmill as I would've 18 without.
Q: What's the farthest you've ever run on a treadmill?
Q: Do you like treadmills?
Q: Have you ever run in the snow? Did you slip?
Q: How do people train for long races if they live in a wintry place?????

1. about 3 miles (if you mean at the same time).
2.I detest treadmills too. I just can't seem to get into the groove with them. I'd much rather run outside.
3. Yes, I've run in the snow. If the snow is new than it isn't so bad. If it is icy, then I either skip the day or I ride my bike on my trainer, or do an aerobics video. Sometimes I run on the road when the sidewalks are icy.
4. Windblocker balaklava and windblocker fleece. I LOVE mine. I wear lots of layers, then I can remove layers as I get warmer. Having the stroller is especially useful for this. I also wear smart wool socks, they keep your feet warm and dry, even if your shoes aren't. They make some great running socks. Pretty much, if you have good equipment you can do it. Also, instead of running in the morning, like I would like to, I wait until Jamie gets home when it is a little bit warmer.
HATE treadmills. generally speaking my max on running is 5K. i have ADD when it comes to running. that's why i like tri's. too bad it's been so long since my last one!
I've not gotten on a treadmill since I fell off one in high school right in front of the football team quarter back. That's a true story.
You are amazing to run in that weather. You are amazing to go for THE Boston. Your eyebrows are amazing!!!
Thx for your family letter. It was so fun to read!!
Farthest I've run on a treadmill is 8 miles. I prefer to run outside, but a treadmill is tolerable if I have something good to watch on TV. I don't think I ever want to train in the snow--that's dedication!
1. I can't remember.. probably 8-10 max.
2. Only for short distances! I'm with you, it's way too monotonous for long periods of time. I enjoy a good 3 mile run on the treadmill, though -especially if there is something interesting on T.V.
3. Yes, most recently this past Saturday. It was a short run, though -my ears and throat start to get weird if I run in the cold for too long. In Michigan preseason track began in January, and it was always bitter cold during that time (so I can relate to your Ohio freeze-a-thon)! Warm running tights, gloves, and a fleece headband are musts! Looks like you've got that covered, though.
4. Well, for short-ish races (like in track) it is easy to do indoor track workouts and cross training, but I would really like someone to answer that question about training for long races for me too! That always has puzzled me.. how DO people do it that live in the cold?
I forgot to mention that the kids can stay pretty warm in the stroller if you purchase a rain cover and bundle them up with a coat and a few blankets. Lucy and Seth have yet to complain, and I've taken them out in below freezing weather in the stroller. They are both nice and toasty when we get home. Besides, then Lucy has an excuse to ask for hot chocolate!
1. I have done 10miles
2. I like treadmills fine - i like putting it on random so i can get some diversity in the run without manually having to put it in. I feel the way others feel about treadmills about tracks - i HATE running around in a circle over and over and over again - i used one to train for my marathon on - i hated it - i did 16miles on a track once ahhhhh!
3. In Russia i had to get some running in - and yes i slipped enough to fall right on my butt without even enough time to realize it. I recommend the hot packs for those cold days - holding them and putting them in your shoes to keep your toes warm.
4. People here have paths to run on in the cold - but they use gyms like crazy - i think they switch up their treadmills so they can mix everything up. My buddy is doing th boston and he is just running like crazy in the gym - when the weather is better he will head outside again - he did 28 on the treadmill - but he is a little obsessed - he does 28 miles in a little over 2 and 1/2 hours.
There is my book of opinions - love that you are coming to Boston though!
