Passport Problems

I went to the passport office today for my scheduled appointment (that took forever to set up in the first place thanks to their automated lady thinking Felicity's cries were my responses and so it kept hanging up on me after too many indiscernible answers on my part). Sure enough, no passport change.

I need to bring my marriage license, which I planned on, but forgot, but brought my SS card since that's where I remembered changing my first name. The lady said I need my marriage license--not certificate? We don't have a license and in UT when I tried to change my name on my license they said our certificate wasn't legal since it was from the temple and I told them I didn't have anything else, so they wouldn't change my name on my license! In Utah of all places. I had to wait until NYC where they didn't know anything about temple marriage certificates and I looked pretty honest in that place, so they gave it to me.

So, I need to contact OR and see if there is some kind of legal record I can print off via internet--doubt it. Hopefully the certificate will be enough.

I also have to have proof that I've been called Marilu all my life by bringing in a bunch of stuff that's older than five years old with that name. So my old SS card with Mary Lou won't work. She suggested my year books from high school. I checked, my year books don't have it. It's all just in journals, nothing official that I can think of, so I'm really going to have to think about this. SO annoying, I was holding back tears when I left because it was all just such a useless pain and Josh left work to watch the girls and everything, ug.

Q: What do you have from growing up that shows your full name--that you'd have on hand still?
Q: Do you have your marriage license on top of certificate or just the latter?

I work at LDS Family Services and we require all our couples to turn in a certified copy of their marriage license as well as their temple sealing certificate. They are two separate things if you got married pretty much after 2000. Before that, I know some of my couples have two in one. I know mine are separate. Good luck! What a pain!

I have a marriage license from Provo City Registrar and then the SL Temple Marriage Record or whatever it is called. Where did you get the marriage license that you had to bring to the temple? Just call up that city office and have them send you a certified copy. GOod luck and have a wonderful trip! Love BECCA M

Yep, we had to have our legal marriage certificate when we applied for student housing (which we ended up not needing because Rice doesn't have married student housing, oh well). We had to get the license from the county, not the city. I wish they would tell you these things at the temple when you get married. It wouldn't be so hard for the person taking care of the paperwork to tell you that you need to request a copy of the marriage license from the county for legal purposes, would it? Good Luck, I hope you can get this taken care of in time.

A1:I have a copy of my "alien" card when I first came to the states. Sadly, I had to part with it when I became a citizen.

A2:I have both a county certified marriage license and a temple certificate. My license is falling apart and I was told to get a six seal certificate. Huh? I'll have to look into that. Good luck!

I have found all of this surprising! I can't believe it's true! I thought the guy in SLC was just cranky, which I think he was, but still, two seperate docs? I'm with you Arlynda, why can't they just tell you this? Soo annoying. Paige, what's the difference? WHy do you need two seperate things? Hi by the way!

Dara, beats me what the whole 6 seal thing is! I'm so glad I don't have to bother with all of that "alien" stuff--I always thought that was sort of weird that they call foreigners that:). That would be sad to part with it.

Hi Rebecca too! Good tip, I'll call them when we get back since we've decided to just change my name on the ticket to Mary Afton Southam. I just thought of that last night and it's easier than the passport hassle since I don't think I have what they want. Ugh.

But it still might be a small pain, the airline lady said she couldn't change my name on the phone, so I just need to bring my marriage certificate to the airport to show them my last name changed...but now that I think about it, UGH, that still leaves my first name in some trouble. Seriously, this is a real pain.
