Eight Miles

You don't have to tell me how good I look, pretty hot right? I didn't make this large just because it gets pretty ugly up close (did you just click to maximize it???). This is from a few months ago. I just wanted to show how my face got so blotchy after running, but this medium size really doesn't show much.

Last Saturday I ran, or rather jogged, 8 painful miles. Josh got up earlier than I did and ran 10 though, so I shouldn't complain--but we are made up so SO differently that he seems like he'd be able to get up any day and do that whereas it would take me months to build to that. So not fair.

I used to think, and still do, that 8 miles was a big deal, but let me put it in context for you so you can understand too why 8 miles just isn't enough.
HOOD TO COAST RELAY. It's an awesome relay race that covers 197 miles--yes, you read that right--and 12 team members each running three legs. We did it a few years ago so I know how fun it is, if you're ready. We just decided our legs on Monday night and I just read this freaky review that makes me think I'm going to nearly die.
Considering that my first leg is 7.42, then 4.15, then 5.35 in about a day and a half (not to mention limited sleep and somehow a nursing baby), now how does 8 miles sound?
Q: What's the longest race you've run?
Q: Were you prepared?
Q Does this kind of race sound fun?
Q: Do you think I'm INSANE for not training more? (It's just so hard with two kids in this heat!)Q: Do you have any great running songs

Go Afton!!! You are so good. I think that does sound fun-under the condition that I was training. Nursing and training? I don't think so. MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE if it was at the stage of solid supplementing. btw, how will you see your kiddos? Are Josh's parents watching all the kids? I'd be interested to know the logistics. And I didn't realize you had several legs. I thought it was one leg then you were done. Good LUCK!!!

I got your msg tonight, but its a little late to call now. You're sweet about the bullying. I wish it was much less of Ellie, but she definitely was dominating. I REALLY hope its different next visit!!

Afton I love that I found your blog, and I love that you always have questions at the end!!

A: I ran a marathon (26.2 miles) it was the same wk as Ben's 1st birthday and the same month I got pregnant with Tyler.
A: I wasn't as prepared as I would have liked.
A: I like to run with friends, not in different legs.
A: What looks hard about this race isn't the distance as much as having different legs... don't you cool down and get stiff between runs???

Girl, way to go! Would love to run sometime!!!
ran a marathon; yes was prepared but would like to do better next time; your race sounds AWESOME!; you are not insane--if you can do 8 you will be fine; fave running songs: Smells like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Wish You were Here (Incubus); Everybody's got their something (Nika Costa); The Distance (Cake), stuff by Justin Timberlake, ANY Kanye West (Jesus Walk with me is good)

I am SO not a runner. I hate it, so I totally admire you doing this. Good luck!

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - Daft Punk (original)
Any Rocky songs (Particularly Rocky 4 songs)
You're the Best (from Karate Kid)
Feel good Inc.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I just bought a few. I really liked some of the songs you guys do, but some were a little slower than I'd like and some I think I'd just end up dancing to:). I bought...don't contain your laughter:

1. Back That ThAng Up (I couldn't find it under "Thing"--nice.
2. Crimson and Clover
3. Can't Hold Us Down C.Aguilera
4. A Little LEss Conversation
5.--I wanted Gold Digger, but only the explicit version.

Thanks for your encouragement! I'm motivated now, we'll see how I feel in the morning.

This rate sounds like so much fun!!! I did a Marathon a 1/2 and other races - i am working on doing another 1/2 and marathon - but i want to qualify for Boston - so we will see. The first full i wasn't as trained as i wanted to be - but i did run the whole thing - NO walking (that was my big thing - granted sometimes my running is as fast as some's walking ;))
A good running song - i love dido (old school but she has a good under beat) pirates of the Caribbean "He's a Pirate" will totally pump you up - lately i haven't had music - but i also really like coldplay and snow patrol (one of my favorites) fiest is good too - but not everything - i could go on for awhile. ENJOY the race - it looks like it will be absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!!

That's awesome, Good Luck! Glen's little bro ran that the past couple of years and I think it sounds like a blast. When do you run? I'd love to run sometime. I think I'm going to do the Surfside half in February w/Jenn....you should join us :) I've done 2 half's before and I think I was prepared. I'm weird--I don't run with music. I'd much rather run with someone and have some girl time or use the time to clear my head and think.

I've never run in a race, I hate running, and I have no desire to ever train for a race because I hate it that much :-) But my best workout motivational songs are a throw back to college days: Chumbawamba's Tubthumping song and Spice Girls song Wannabe. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that!!

Hey there! Longest race is probably 13.1. The first one, not so prepared (you obviously remember that one!) and second one, better prepared, but I'm still waiting to train for my 'big' one where I'll really go for speed.
Favorite running songs (and it sounds like you want pumper-uppers, not inspirational "flow" type songs, so I'll just give those):
1) Fighter - Christina Aguilera. The last 90 seconds make me MOVE even if it's my last mile of a 15 mile run.
2) Footloose
3) Good Brown Gravy (not sure who it's by, it's a country song)
4) Waterfall - Rascal Flatts (it doesn't sound like a good running song until you run to it, and then it really is good!)

Anyway, good luck! You can totally do this!! You're awesome!

Yay for you, Afton! I was on track to run a half-marathon and got up to 6 miles at a time and then found out I was pregnant. I keep intending to get back to it, but you know how life goes :o) I think you'll do great because it is a team effort and you know the team is counting on you. It is amazing what a good dose of adrenaline can do! Good Luck.. can't wait to hear about the race!

Hi Afton! It was so great to see you! Crazy race, huh? It was a first for me, and I had alot of fun. So exhausting though!
1. Longest races I've run are 1/2 marathons, but I think Hood to Coast would count - about 18 miles in 10 hours! 6.81, 6.82, 4.25!! That last leg was actually the worst - it was so hot!
2. I have actually felt very well prepared for all the races I've run.
3. this relay SOUNDS fun (and in lots of ways it is)...but actually DOING it was somewhat different...
4. No, you're not insane - I run really early in the a.m. if I don't want to bring kids though
5. Don't usually run with music, actually

Vicki and Alicia, yours were the only ones with music ideas that I didn't get to before my race. I'm going to have to look those up before our next one--I LOVE finding new ones! I actually ended up buying a different C.Agu. one because the fighter one seemed a little slower than I remembered but I think I should just get it anyway and pay attention to the end!

I'm inspired by all of everyone's running efforts, it gets me pretty excited about doing more of it. I have to say, I've been movtivated time and again by others' running stories and races.

Kyndra, I think you're hilarious. I have to say, the running itself on the training days are pretty miserable, it's just the pay off of either weightloss, feeling healthy, or a race day that I do it for, rarely rarely just because it sounds like a fun idea!

And Julie, I plan to do a real entry on this tomorrow, but just to respond to you, it was soo fun to see you! I wish we had more time to talk. I was half dead when I was talking to you but it was such a great surprise. What leg did you have? I'll try to find it. I want to hear more about what you thought.
