This was the happy couple the moment after we got engaged. Gosh, what a beautiful ring. It was a blue topaz stone with diamonds on the band. Did you catch that? Was? I lost it one day. How do you do that? Well, I don't know, I'm convinced it's genetic though. My dad lost his, my mom lost her stone, only to be followed by her band years later. I loved the blue stone idea just because, but it worked out well that it was cheaper too because deep down I had that fear that the genes would gang up on me and steal my ring too. Actually I just hate how rings trap water and I'm washing my hands all day long so I just take it off, put it in my pocket to dry, and then usually remember to put it on. But after going through some pics I realize it's off in a lot of them. Sorry for getting on your case Josh about never wearing yours...(he doesn't like how it fits, I guess he has big ol knuckles and so it just feels really big once it's where it should be).
I still had the bands that you wear on either side of it, but they were just plain silver and I only looked sorta married because I just wore one and they're pretty skinny. I really wanted to look married for the birth of Felicity, so I bugged Josh a bunch to get me a fake ring to wear from Walmart. I just watned a fake one I could wear for the next five years until we're out of debt and could buy a real replacement.
He obliged, but the ring he bought had a giant blue stone and wasn't really practical for the next five years. Fortunately my little sister was in town and had one I could wear.

Thanks Tina. I think it's really pretty, but Josh wanted me to wear a ring from him and not my sister (better her than someone else though right?). So he bought me a new one.
Which is what brings me to today. Well, this week. I haven't been able to find it, but that's happened before. Some of you may remember me talking about how I can't find my ring and sometimes I'm almost convinced I've lost it again, but it almost always shows up. Leaving on vacation tomorrow I really wanted to have it because we're going to take some family pictures and a wedding ring is a nice thing to have in those.
As I was doing one of my four loads of laundry today I saw this:

Did you see that? Look closer:

And people call washing machines the sock monster. I kind of hope Josh doesn't see this because I just tried to convince him I'm careful with valuable things.
Q: Have you ever lost your wedding ring?
Q: Do you care if it's real? Okay, a real one by meaning $$ or a diamond?
Q: Do you have a colored stone?

Hi Afton! Yeah, so have you heard of ring insurance? It costs us just $60 per year and is attached to our homeowners insurance. It covers mine and Ryan's. (Ironically, it was only $50 per year on our renters policy.) Anyway, I've never gone a minute without it insured. I recommend it to you, friend! :-)
So glad you found the ring. So far I haven't lost mine (we have insurance, too). I care way too much if it's real or not (which is why I have a smaller stone--and just one!!). Crazy because I know people with (even really BIG) fakies and I never would be able to tell the difference. I fear that someone would "out" me, though, if mine wasn't real. I like the colored ones--show a lot more personality and individuality, I think, than those of us who just go with tradition!
I lost my ring once, though I knew right where it was. It slipped off while I was washing my hands at the BYU Creamery. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Luckily one of the guys who worked in the back was kind enough to turn the water off and undo the pipes under the sink and out it fell. I think colored and fake are fine for some people, but I bask in traditions so for me I wanted real and that's what I got. It's smaller but I don't mind at all.
Wow! I'm so glad you didn't loose your new one! :) Mine slipped off once when I was doing laundry and I had to pull everything out very carefully to find it, but I did. (Thank goodness I hadn't started the water yet. I usually do.)
Mine's real, but small. I wasn't about to ask my hubby to break the bank for my ring. Didn't want to start our married life totally broke! It's white gold too, which made it cheaper.
Have a fun trip!
Hello!
A: Never lost it (but I did chuck it across the room when I was asleep--I'm not sure what I was dreaming about)
A: I don't really have an opinion on real or fake, I just really like them sparkley!
A: I would love a colored stone, but don't have one. I remember your gorgeous blue stone!
I've never lost my ring, but I lost Dug's ring last year!! It was so cheap though that I was kind of glad it happened because we bought him a nicer new one.
For me I want real because I am someone who internalizes symbolism and the materials of my ring mean something to me.
I don't have a colored stone, but I want sapphire eternity bands to go on either side of my engagement ring to switch up sometimes with the diamond bands I currently have.
Your so funny! I've never lost my ring, but when I was pregnant with Emrie I was so fat and huge and couldn't fit in my rings, so I got a fake one from Dillards. I didn't want to have a baby w/out a wedding ring on :)
I baked mine in a muffin. I was mixing it by hand (literally) and forgot to take off my rings. I found the wedding band in the batter and then Dean and I had to stab all of the baked muffins until we found the engagement ring. But it was no worse for the wear!
I think the muffin story is the funniest, that's hilarious.
I haven't lost mine--I think the only time I take it off is when I'm running, but then sometimes I forget and I'll go a week before I remember to put it back on again.
I really don't care if it's real or fake. I told my husband that I was fine with a fake one, but he went with a real one anyway, but I did insist on getting a smaller one because I just am not that into big rings, I suppose (our compromise was small diamond, but the highest color and clarity he could find).
and i loved your colored stone when I first saw it! so unique, and very afton.
and on other posts--I loved the pic of Hazel on her birthday post, and I love pink too! We painted our kitchen red last year and the primer for it was pink, and I seriously thought about just leaving it pink, except it was sort of an odd shade, so I put the red on after all. But I love reds and pinks. So much more fun, and as you say, so much more noticeable. I have a red trench coat and a pink dress (never worn together) that get more compliments then all the rest of my clothes put together.
1. No, I've never lost my ring. I just wear it all the time. I know if I take it off, I'll lose it.
2. I don't think I really care if it's real. I'm not big into jewelry.
3. No, but I have a cool band. It wraps around the diamond part. My husband said that's because it's twisted..kind of like us. :)
the husband of my best friend from college has lost his ring a couple of times..... every time Krisen has to replace it, she adds another "." to the end of what she had engraved on the inside... it's up to "something..." now. :) :) :)
I never had my engagement ring and wedding band sodered together and I lost my wedding band. I guess that's better than losing the part with the diamond. Chris had to contact the company and get them to create a new band for me because they don't carry my ring anymore and the band is patterend, not just a plain band. My engagement ring also has sapphires on the sides of the band. It came with diamonds and they thought I was crazy when I specifically asked them to take them out and replce them with a "cheaper" stone. At least the difference in price covered the labor. I love having the color.
Hiya! Love this post. I have never lost my ring, but when my time came, I went with a band (no stone) and still love it. Never goes out of style, doesn't snag on fabric or more importantly, child. BTW, I love Hazel's pic in the earlier post. She has grown so much!
Hi Afton! I lost my engagement ring up on the Alpine Slide in Park City. We were about to go down the slide when this huge thunderstorm erupted and we all ran to shelter. I lost my ring somehow in the freezing rain that was pelting us from all sides...the funny thing was, I had just come back from Europe and I'd left it at home so I wouldn't lose it! So sad!! We searched for an hour that night (in the rain it was not so successful) and then went back up with a metal detector the next day with no luck. Travis was SO sweet and got me another one for my birthday. We did see a moose that night in the rainstorm; that was pretty cool! :)
What a hoot! :) I think I would always keep it on with that kind of track record! :) Congrats on finding it- at least you know it is clean!
Thanks for your comment on my blog- to answer your question- the pic on top was taken at a pier at a beach in Florida (forgetting the name at the moment- but on the gulf side-northern part but not quite the pan handle- to give you a picture). It was taken last November when we went there to visit Aaron's mom who lives near there for Thanksgiving. To participate in your post, here are my answers:
1) No- the only time I ever take it off is when handling raw meat (ewwww- don't want that gunk in it!) so the closest I have come is leaving it on the counter, forgetting to put it back on.
2) No, it is the symbol behind it that matters. My ring is small (though real) and relatively inexpensive. Aaron talks about buying me a bigger one someday when he can afford it, but I say why? This is my wedding band. A reminder of the days when we were young and just starting out on faith.
3) Nope- plain old normal small diamond! :)
Geez, this was a long response- I apparently enjoyed reading it! :)
I am so bad with jewelry too, Afton! I wear my wedding band and watch and keep the rest locked up. I never remove the wedding band, and only take off the watch when the battery dies. I am notorious for beating up expensive things :o)
By the way, I love reading your blog :o)
I'm glad to know I'm not the only sometimes ringless person for whatever reason. I do love the muffin story, sounds like a tasty night! I remember my friend Vicki's mom lost hers when she was canning corn or something and so for weeks they were eating it trying to find it, I'm pretty sure with no luck. Man, I'd just give up because with my luck I wouldn't end up finding it anyway.
I thought your thoughts on the stone were interesting and all valid. Those of you who have diamonds are probably more careful with your rings so it makes more sense for you to have them than me!
